The Samurai S310XX Washi Jeans bring together two of Japan's most storied textile traditions in a single piece of cloth. The weft is spun from washi paper—handmade Japanese paper produced from the inner bark of mulberry and mitsumata plants, crafted for over a thousand years for calligraphy, shoji screens, bookbinding, and art. Samurai spins that historic paper into yarn and weaves it into the weft of a 15oz selvedge alongside a cotton warp made from extra-long staple fibers with a soft, silk-like hand. The resulting fabric sits at the heavier end of midweight with a beautifully textured surface that carries the character of both materials. Because washi fibers are relatively porous and lightweight, they contribute to a more breathable fabric that feels less clammy than a comparable heavy cotton denim. Custom hinode iron buttons, hidden rivets, a selvedge-cut coin pocket, silver and gold lamé selvedge ID, cowhide leather patch, and jacquard woven Shogyo Mujo pocket bags complete a jean built on the widest silhouette in the Samurai lineup.
